January 2012 Reports

The COMMODORE'S COLUMN by Greg Fighmaster

The Commodore’s Ball, the big event of the year and what a special night it was. Of course I’m speaking not only from a North Palm Beach Yacht Club point of view but also from a personal view. The attendance was over 100 and everyone enjoyed all Hors d'oeuvres, drinks and great music. The introductions of the past Commodores and the new board went like clock work thanks to the Master of Ceremonies Bill Kraus. Thanks Bill, great job. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the prayer from the club Chaplin Dotty LeVally it was my turn with the microphone. My son Guido had requested to say a few words, so instead of giving my speech, which I was told better not last more than two minutes, I gave the microphone to my son. That is when the special moment took place. After saying some very kind words about me and his mother Angie, Guido turned to his girlfriend Michelle Masters, went down on one knee and asked Michelle to marry him. Everyone stood and applauded as Michelle said yes and they kissed. This was a double treat for me and a real special day to remember.

During any given year the Commodore for that year may choose a non board member as the "Member of the Year". This individual is recognized during the Commodore’s Ball presented with a plaque, and their name is engraved on the trophy cup that is kept in the NPBYC trophy case at the North Palm Beach Country Club. Staff Commodore Patty Collins chose P/C Dick Daytz for his outstanding contribution to the club. Congratulations Dick!

It is amazing how much preparation and effort goes into the planning and organizing a large event like the Commodores Ball. Thanks to the following committee members and volunteers for all their work: Rear Commodore Gayle Flaherty, Dr. Chet & Suzi Fichandler, Past Commodore Tom Collins, Marie Austin, Jan Mallen, Dotty LeVally, Vice Commodore Bill Rose, Cheryl Rose, Secretary and P/C Joseph Tringali.

With most of our members back down for the winter, the Board would like to ensure great attendance at the Club’s events so they are planning some "Special Events".

The first event is "An Evening with The Fabulous Duprees" on February 10, 2012. This is a land and sea event. The boaters will be making a weekend of it at the Log-gerhead [formerly Harborage] Marina. Dinner for all is being planned at Duffy’s, and for those who choose to stay over-night, special pricing has been arranged at a local hotel. The second special event is in March, a spring training game between St. Louis Cardinals, and Miami Marlins [see below].

One of our Clubs objectives is to recruit more people that have an interest in becoming members of the North Palm Beach Yacht Club. By pursuing a high standard in terms of quality events, I believe the desire to become a North Palm Beach Yacht Club member will continue to increase. This is all due to the hard work and dedication of the all volunteer Board and all the quality people that make up the member-ship of the North Palm Beach Yacht Club.

Remember to send in your dues if you have not done so already. Let’s have another great year together.

Vice Commodore's Report by  Bill Rose

As I write this, a major storm has hit the Pacific Northwest. Yesterday, the temperature in Inter-national Falls, MN was 25 below zero and Jim-my Buffett is right...They're freezing up in Buffalo, stuck in their cars and I'm sitting here 'neath the sun and the stars. Does it get any better than this?

We hope you enjoyed the Commodore's Ball. What a great even-ing. So many elegant ladies accompanied by some very distin-guished gentlemen. Were you in uniform or a tux? Remember the uniform is what makes a yacht club different from other organi-zations. Our club ties are very nice and everyone has a blue blaz-er in their closet. Don't forget the pocket crest and cap emblem. The club has an inventory of these and other item such as cap devices and epaulets. If you would like any of these items, just give me a call and I will bring them to the next event.

We have received an application for membership from Rick and Karey Kendrick. They are realtors and live in Old Port Cove and are the proud owners of 21’ Century ’Chase" Their sponsors are Jim and Bernice Freeland, along with Nick and Mary Lucas.

The North Palm Beach Yacht Club wants to grow. Be sure to invite friends to one of our events. We always have member-ship applications at these events. This club likes to have a good time and new friends can only make that better.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of the North Palm Beach Yacht Club, thank you for your continued membership. We look forward to seeing you at our get-togethers.

Fair winds and following seas.

January Activities

On Saturday the 21st, 6 boats attended our monthly raft up at old port cove. It was a beautiful sunny day and many non boaters came along to enjoy the fun.

Mañana, the anchor boat, with P/C’s Tom and Patty Collins, (always there first and ready to help) with their guests, Carol Heuser, Ted and Kathy Leverette, Ronnie and Jerry Stein, and Julie Fenix .

Tranquilizer with Dick and Lynn Daytz and their guests Dottie LeVally, James and Bernice Freeland, Nick Lucas, Bill Walker and Patti Maxwell (Dick and Lynn always come with a boat full of fun people).

Stocks and Blondes with Doug and Christine Churchill (Doug thanks for helping me tie up in the brisk wind).

R- Wave with Rich and Cindy D'Anieri (despite problems in both his engines he forged on to make it to the raft up).

Chase with future new members Rick, "the hat man" and Karey Kendrick and their guest Sandy from Ohio.

Completing the raft up was Four Olde Tymes with Wayne and Donna Jablonski

Sorry if I missed any participants, I am still new at this and it wasn't the 3 beers.

And than there is the hat story.......................

Being a brisk windy day new member Rick wearing a large straw hat stood up and his hat sailed into the wind and in the rough seas. We all gasped and felt sorry for him for a minute than went on having fun eating, drinking and watching his hat float further away.

The hero of this story Doug Churchill repeatedly tried to flag down boats and kayaks to rescue the hat to no avail. Finally after whistling and waving and getting the group to wave we managed to get a friendly boater into shouting distance. After telling them our plight of the lost floating hat they took off on the rescue mission.

In a few minutes we saw them pull the hat out of the water and we all started cheering

(especially" Hat man Rick") but they continued to go in the wrong direction away from us and cheers turned into boo's and hisses.

Than out of nowhere they reappeared speeding in our direction again boos and hisses turned into cheers , and applause (how fast we turn) after a few minutes they were at our boat. We rewarded them with libations and sweets and many thanks. A group of nice friendly people (like us).

THE END

The month of February will give us an outing at the

Loggerhead [formerly Harborage] Marina in Stuart on the 10th and 11th.

Also a raft up on the 25th of February at Old Port Cove will complete the month.

Rear Commodore's Report by

Gayle Flaherty

Well how did you like the Commodore’s Ball or, our Oscar night toast to our Commodore’s and ourselves? Outgoing Commodore Patty Collins certainly deserved the tribute and incoming Commodore Gregg Fightmaster had a wonderful show of support. I thought it was outstanding to see everyone looking like stars. Thanks to Chet and Suzi Fichandler, Bill & Cheryl Rose, Tom Collins, Dotty LeVally and her friend, Jan Mallow who showed up in the morning to help make the evening a winner. Special thanks also to Marie Austin, who always puts the invitations together and gets them printed and mailed , receives the responses and checks and does the seating arrangements. Special thanks also to Dotty LeVally, who always is on the centerpiece committee and works on seating arrangements with Marie. Everyone seemed to enjoy the centerpieces glowing with candlelight and flowers. Thanks also, to our newsletter editor, Carol Heuser, who worked all night taking many photos of the revelers. However, the real surprise of the evening came when Guido Fightmaster, spoke of his love for his Mom and Dad, our Commodore. After he finished his short thanks to his parents he suddenly got down on his knee and proposed to his girlfriend Michelle Masters. Out came the ring and we had our first engagement at the Commodore’s Ball. The room burst into applause as the upbeat tone for the evening was set. We won’t soon forget this Commodore’s Ball.

First Friday: We’ll be back at the NPBCC, where our burgee flies on the flagpole to greet us, on Feb. 3. Be sure to take a look at our trophy case in the lobby on your way to the lounge. Our Happy Hour starts at 5:00PM. The country club starts their happy hour at 4:00PM. Remember prices go up
